A quote from somewhere, relevant to my thoughts about my mother.

“Generally speaking, abuse and neglect begin when someone doesn't care about your unhappiness. Whether the ways they hurt you are intentional or accidental, violent or subtle, what matters is that they're unwilling to take responsibility for what they mean to you. They'll blame you for being hurt by them, as if it's somehow rude or inconvenient or selfish of you to get hurt. At what point do they own up to their actions? How long will they tolerate your suffering before they decide to lift a finger to help?“
