Although I said I wasn’t going to do more with plain abstracts until I do a calligraphy piece on one, I did discover that I can use long flat strips to make shapes like you would for quilling, and that those too produce a whole nother look. And I bet they’ll be good for letter shadows too. They’re lower profile and the wind doesn’t affect them as much.
