You know how you’ll be having an ok day and then you’re trying to do something simple and no one cooperated and it isn’t clear why, so you sit down and wait and suddenly you have the urge to cry out of nowhere and for no particular reason? And you look at the things on the floor and think, and your tongue becomes think and unwilling, and you can’t stop doing what you’re doing even as you’re carrying on a dialogue with yourself in your head about what you should do.

You know how that is?

And suddenly everyone is shrieking and from the tone of it there should be rivers of blood running through the house but really it’s just about—what? What the fuck is it even about?— but everyone is shrieking about something different and everyone is telling you to do something different and so you put your hands over your ears and go to the bed and cry and squeeze your eyes tight and rock until they stop and slowly, slowly you can open your eyes again (but not stop rocking and not unclamp hands from ears yet) and you’re looking at the floor again for a while and eventually you can take hands away from ears and get a handful of Kleenex to wipe up the snot that’s been itching your nose and dangling in a thin thread for 10 minutes now and this movement is enough, you can stop rocking but you still can’t talk and you’re still staring at the floor until someone comes and doesn’t yell they ask for something and now you can do it and finally they all go away, happy, and it’s quiet again.

You know how that is?
